California retirement systems including California Personnel Retirement System (CalPERS), California State Teachers Retirement System (CalSTRS) and others have staggering pension liabilities. It's unfair to retirees and taxpayers to not address unsustainable pension obligations. In Mountain View we have negotiated with employee unions by having employees share pension costs. Similar effective employee cost sharing at the state level is essential to maintain these pension systems.
